Power Flushing in Brighouse

A power flush is not a chemical poured into the system and left to work. A pump is connected to the circuit and water is driven through it at high velocity, with the flow reversed repeatedly so debris that has settled into one direction gets lifted rather than pushed further along. Cleaning agent goes in to break down the magnetite and any existing corrosion; the system is then flushed until the water runs clear and an inhibitor goes in to slow the process starting again.

On a domestic system in Brighouse that is usually the better part of a day, depending on the number of radiators and how bad the build-up is. Each radiator is worked individually — there is no point driving clean water round a loop while the worst radiator quietly keeps its sludge.

Not every cold radiator is a flushing job, and we would rather say so than sell one. Magnetite will start forming again the moment the system goes back into service — it is a product of steel and water being in contact, not of neglect. What changes is how fast it accumulates and where it ends up.

A magnetic filter fitted on the return catches it before it reaches the boiler's heat exchanger, and it is cleaned out at the annual service. Inhibitor slows the corrosion itself. Between them they are the difference between a flush that lasts years and one that needs repeating.

Most boiler manufacturers now expect a filter and correctly dosed inhibitor as a condition of the warranty on a new installation, so on an install this is not an upsell — it is what keeps the guarantee valid.
